Vantage Point (2008)

I watched this film after buying it on DVD, which was rather good quality, from the same shop I replaced the Prison Break DVDs.

The film is set in Spain, where the president is assassinated in the middle of a anti-terrorism summit. A large puzzle involves, where you get to see each unique persons 'vantage point', or his point of view of the incident.

As you see each vantage point, from the camera man to the control room to the officer, its like a piece of the jigsaw is added to the puzzle, and once you complete the 8 vantage points, the story unfolds to show the extremely unpredictable plot.

Each vantage point, although repeating the same 23 minutes, from noon till the bomb explodes, it shows you a different story. Do not worry, you will not get annoyed seeing the same shot and explosion 8 times - in fact, each time it happens you discover another piece of the puzzle.

With each shot and explosion, you have your nerves tingling waiting for the next. The action is set nicely with appropriate music, and even the setting is beautiful - which is filmed in Mexico.

At the climax, after the 8 vantage points, you will see some great car chase scenes, as well as gunfire and that sort of action. Everything you'd want from an action film is included in this masterpiece.

I recommend this for all action lovers. Enjoy!

Prison Break DVDs

After I had borrowed season two on DVD from my friend, I needed to get season one somewhere, so I could see the whole series at once.

I went off to my favorite place to buy DVDs, a shop in Istiklal Mall, which sells high quality DVDs for 1JD each. I recommend this place for any film lover.

I asked him for season one, and he had the DVDs. They were 6 discs but he had an offer so I only payed 5JDs. If you went to any old shop, you would've payed 9JDs.

Although, looking at the actual profit the shop makes, which is huge - since one blank DVD costs barely anything, you could sell it at any price.

I checked one disc to see its quality and it was great. It turns out the episodes are recorded from some Fox TV thing. And it was HD, lucky america.

When I went back home to see which disc was which, to write on them which disc each one was, I found out each case, which carries two discs, contained exactly the same episodes.

So now I need to go back to Istiklal Mall, but my mum is not willing to go back again. I will have to wait, in despair, until tomorrow.

Does anyone know when the shops in the mall open (which time)?

Pirate Everything In Jordan

Getting a pirate copy is easier than you thought. In London, you have those Chinese men with huge bags. They wait around malls, shops, they lurk around busy streets, even around cinemas. They don’t need to advertise or promote their business.

No policemen are around, so the coast is clear. People gather round, and – like selling drugs – they open their bags and present their goods. Pirate copied DVD’s, wrapped in plastic bags and a badly made cover.

Even though they have the worst quality films, everyone buys takes out their five pounds and buys a DVD or two. To the buyers, they find it better to bring the family and their friends round their home made cinema and watch their movie. Either that, or you pay five pounds to watch it in the cinema – by yourself.

The quality has no match, one is great, and the other one is fuzzy, filled with shadows of people going to the toilet, and the coughs and laughs of the others in the cinema. The picture usually is off centered, and as soon as the movie finishes you can see the camera moving, and the guy leaving the cinema. All this, or the cinema? This.

It may not be the best thing to buy a pirate copy, but getting one is well worth it. I would rather spend my well earned ten dinars on quite a lot of DVDs, rather than taking a friend with me to the cinema and finishing it all up. Most people will bear with the bad quality for 1.5JDs. I would say that everything has its price. I would prefer to buy a cheap copy of a film.

Although it may not seem right at first, but I believe that if cinemas had their price lowered to something like 1.5 JD, more people would go to the cinema rather than buy a DVD. The same goes for software.

An engineer would rather buy a cheap copy of AutoCAD, then buy a 300 dollar legal copy of the program. A boy, like me, would rather buy a game for a few JDs, than spend 45 JDs to buy the same game from Prime Megastore.

Jordanians have found something called pirate copy as a normal copy. They have nothing called legal software, nothing called copyright. Pirated DVDs litter the selves of the stores and they are always crammed full of people. Your local stationary shop has boxes full of PC and PS2 games, all of them pirated of course.

The real jokes are the popular ones that have to hide their goods. A store in Gardens Street looks perfectly legal. It has some NBA and Fifa games, legal ones, collecting dust on the selves. These aren’t for sale, these are just there so when the police come they won’t get caught.

There are catalogues under the counters, and when you choose a game, he writes it down and goes to the storage room (on another floor in the building) and returns with the pirated copies.

Another place in Amman Mall sells them. You’d expect somewhere as that to be safe and free of pirated copies, but it isn’t. Although the shelves are littered with the same legal tapes and CDs, when you ask him for a pirate DVD, he rummages under the counter and gives it to you. Almost like buying drugs. The DVDs are overpriced anyway, at 3 JDs.

The Middle East and Asia is a huge market of pirate everything. When will we change, or do we need to change, or should the vendors of the films and software change their prices? Comment, I dare you.

Reviewing Two Films

Holes (2003)

Holes is about a boy wrongly convicted off a crime, which is blamed by a long ago curse on the Yelnats family. Stanley is then sent to 'Camp Green Lake', a juvinele camp that hides a great mystery. While digging holes, Stanely makes friends with Hector, who - when they choose to run away - uncovers the mystery of the camp and releases the curse.

This film is a great book turned into a movie. It talks that no matter how unlucky you are, you will find hope in the end. It all relates very well together, and the story/plot is a very interesting one. It also has alot of laughs, and is a good family drama well suited for those who enjoy films with interesting stories.

The Simpsons Movie (2007)

After the Springfield Lake is cleaned up, Homer and his Pig decide to pour thier 'waste' into the lake, making it turn black from pollution. The Enviromental Protection Agency decides to put a huge glass dome on top of Springfield, but the Simpsons family manages to escape and flee to Alaska.

They then get news that Springfield will be blown up to build a new Grand Canyon, but Homer refuses to go back. The rest of the family go back to try and save Springfield, but they can't without Homer's help. Can he save Springfield?

This great addition, from the almighty comedy cartoon The Simpsons, has lots of laughs as well as the drama needed to keep the story. It also has lots of sub plots, such as Homer almost losing his son Bart to his neighbour Ned Flanders. A great comedy, not neccessarily for the entire family, but its still good.

Back To Prison

Yes, school has started again. How I hate school, the worst invention on earth. Why, oh why, do we have to go to school. Grr...

So now I only had a few mere 2 months to enjoy, from 13/06/07 to 19/08/07. The summer was good, even though I had wanted to go to London, but I still had a good time.

Went to quite a few restaurants, my cousin came to visit from London, played games (as usual)... Now the summer holidays seems short. Ah well, I guess I'll have to get used to this torture.

In other news, I bought The Simpsons Movie (pirate copy, of course) and I'll be watching it today hopefully. I also saw Season 1 of Prison Break & some season of Lost for sale, but I'll get them later.
